Profile of James M. Berger.

چکیده
Whether he is restoring his 1976 Triumph TR6 British roadster or analyzing proteins, James Berger is curious about how machines work and what fuels them. Berger, a professor in the Department of Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, primarily studies biological nanomachines, which are fueled by the cellular energy currency ATP and carry out coordinated mechanical tasks. For more than two decades, his work on molecular machines has shed light on DNA replication and chromosome topology at the atomic level. Applying these endeavors to potential medical applications, Berger and his colleagues have described the function of enzymes underlying chemotherapy targets, research that could lead to more effective anticancer treatments. For example, Berger, a member of the National Academy of Sciences, has analyzed a class of antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones. His team has described the X-ray crystal structures of nine different fluoroquinolone–enzyme–DNA complexes for the Mycobacterium tuberculosis gyrase, a bacterial enzyme that relieves supercoiling in DNA. The findings help to explain the antibacterial resistance of the etiological agent for tuberculosis, a major public health threat. The findings also point to new approaches for overcoming the disease.

متن کاملProtein profiling for phylogenetic relationship in snakehead species
Protein banding pattern of eight snakeheads – Channa species viz., Channa striatus, Channa marulius, Channa punctatus, Channa diplogramme, Channa bleheri, Channa gachua, Channa stewartii and Channa aurantimaculata collected from different regions of India were used to study the phylogenetic relationship among them. The banding pattern from muscle protein indicated a unique profile for each spec...

متن کاملThe Ordering Process of Narrative in James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
Regarding the literary historical debates, one of the main concerns of modern historiography is the way of representing the concept of reality within the framework of a coherent narrative, a reality that is only achievable through the process of narrative that is supposed to be constructive and ordering. Therefore, in order to examine this ordering process of narrative in James Joyce's novel, A...

The examination of the theory and history of financial crisis in Europe and the United States is the subject matter of two important works by Kindle Berger (Kindle Herger, 1978, and Kindle Berger & Lafarge, 1982). In his first work, Kindle Berger (1978), has provided us with a remarkable account of European and American financial history from 1720 to 1975. The second hook (Kindle Berger & Lafar...
